DDH ready to bring woes to labor head
THE management of the Davao Doctor's Hospital (DDH) said that it would seek the help of Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Thomas if the DDH labor union would push through with its strike.
Herminio Villano, DDH president said on Monday that management is planning to bring their case to Sto.Tomas and even to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for proper resolution.
"I am sure they will consider this as an important matter to be discussed considering that DDH is a vital medical facility," Villano said.
The DDH president expressed doubts that the members of the Pagkakaisa ng mga Trabahante sa Davao Doctor's Hospital (Patra-DDH), a labor organization affiliated with militant Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), has the capability to conduct a boycott.
"I am sure that (strike) will not happen," the doctor said.
If it were to push through, a daylong strike "will be too long", he added.
Villano assured the public that in case of a strike, the management is ready to implement the necessary measures to ensure the public that the hospital services are not affected.
He, however, refused to elaborate on the steps the hospital intends to implement once the boycott erupts.
Protesters have been staging a picket rally for more than three weeks now. They are asking for a P100 a day wage hike. The clash started when the management stuck to its P26 wage increase offer.
Presently, only the management team composed of head nurses, supervisors and department heads are receiving the P26 salary hike.
"Alangan namang isali namin ang rank and file workers, eh ayaw nila. Kasalanan ba namin yan (How can we grant the same increase for rank and file workers when they have refused? Is it our fault)?" an upset Villano asked.
In these times of economic crisis, it would be "noble" for a company to increase their employees' wages, he said.
"I don't know of any company here in the region or perhaps even the Philippines that implemented a salary increase," Villano stated. CEU
