MARIE Angeli Dimakiling saved the day for the seven-member Davao City chess team by salvaging a bronze medal at the close of the National Age Group Chess Championships at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City last Sunday.

Cindy Atayde of Bulacan, Dimakiling's fifth round opponent, took the gold in the girls 14-under category, which drew 19 chessers nationwide.

Davao City's Palarong Pambansa 2002 board gold medallist Jerwell Andoy of F. Bustamante National High School also garnered five points to grab seventh place in the 53-man boys 12-under event topped by Bulacan bet Karl Victor Ochoa.

The Davao team was also bannered by University of Mindanao's Brene Parreño, Holy Cross of Davao College's Lyndon Sombilon, Osmeña Elementary School's Danilo Engay Jr., F. Bangoy's Adrian and Chito Dimakiling II.

Parreño placed 18th among 38 players in the boys 18-under category ruled by Manila's National Master (NM) Oliver Barbosa, while Sombilon and Chito II finished 14th and 17th, respectively, in the 16-under category.

Julius Joseph de Ramos of Manila bagged the gold in the category.

Engay was No. 10 in the 10-under, while Adrian came 11th in the field of 53 in boys the 14-under.

Cavite's Wesley So and Manila's Nelson Mariano III emerged champions in the 10-under and 14-under categories, respectively.

All champions earned 6.5 points in the five-day chessfest.

Metro Davao Chess Association (MDCA) President Chito Dimakiling and NCFP Regional Director Ronnie Tabudlong served as coaches to the Davao team sponsored by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office and City Councilor Leo Avila III.
