BIR-Davao collection goal slashed by P90M By Christie Enriquez- Uayan
FROM its original target collection of P3.845 billion, this year's target of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for the Davao region was reduced to P 3.755 billion, BIR revenue 19 chief Teodorica Arcega said on Monday.
Arcega said the BIR head office took into consideration the transfer of tax payment of national government agencies (NGAs) from the revenue region 19, her area of responsibility, to revenue region 18.
About P43 million was lost from the region because of the transfer.
"The tax on wages of DepEd employees in Koronadal was transferred that is why our goal was reduced by P90 million," she told reporters in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw.
Revenue region 19 is composed of Davao City, Tagum City, Mati, and Digos City.
Seventy two percent of the region's total collection comes from Davao City while 18.6 percent is contributed by Tagum City. Digos and Mati comprise the remaining 5.9 and 3.4 percent, respectively.
Aside from the transfer of tax payment by the employees, the transfer of tax payment of the former JS Gaisano Mall was also considered, according to Arcega.
The BIR official said that since the Cebu-based Gaisano South Mall now owns the former JS Gaisano Mall, the management decided to pay their tax obligations to the BIR office in Cebu, to avoid hassle.
Despite these circumstances, Arcega remains optimistic that the region can meet its target for the year.
For the first five months of this year alone, the office has collected a total of P1.58 million.
While the amount is 8.8 percent higher than last year's collection, it is still 1.7 percent lower compared to this year's January to May target.
Revenue district 113 Officer Evelyn Sardido shared Arcega's optimisim. She said with the continued efforts by the office and the cooperation of the taxpayers, the P3.775 billion target for this year will be achieved.
Sardido said despite the tax payment transfer affected by the Gaisano South Mall and the decreased government and real property selling activities in the city, the district was able to surpass last year's January to May collection by 10 percent.
