Hope vital to attain peace, Israeli envoy says

A TOP foreign dignitary says hope is an important factor to attaining peace in Mindanao.

Israel's Ambassador to the Philippines Irit Ben Abba said war and terrorism have made mothers fearful of their children's security and future.

Abba was a guest at the Mothers for Peace campaign at the audio-visual room of the Holy Cross College of Davao City on Monday,

Abba said she understands the conflict in Mindanao since Israel is in a similar situation right now.

"In polls conducted, 70 percent of Israelis support peace. We have enough of fighting and war. The only thing we want is to live in peace and sovereignty, to have our own borders recognized by the other side, and to live a life where we will not be harassed everyday," she said.

Abba added that Israelis had been negotiating seriously with the Palestinian for 10 years and the situation is much worse now.

"Negotiations are much more of a frustration period. There seems to be no result coming out from these negotiations for peace," she added.

Abba stressed the importance of hope above all things.

"If people have hope, a sustainable economy, good schools and a good salary at the end of the month, they will stop fighting. If you give people a good reason to wake up in the morning, they'll stop fighting." she said.

Abba said one hand should be held open for peace, but the other hand should be curved into a fist, ready to show a strong hand against those who hinder peace. RCB
