Raging on the street By Jinggoy Salvador
"HOLLYWOOD or Bust" was the first and the last Rage Band concert I saw. It was their farewell show at the Rizal Theater, where Shangri-la Hotel now stands, before they left and tried their luck in the land of promise, the US of A. Rage Band was the most popular rock band in Manila during their time.
It didn't work out for them, I guess. Recently, Rage Band decided to regroup and join the band scene once more. Rizal street (is it a coincidence? Saw them perform at the Rizal Theater in Manila, now Rizal Street in Davao?) was the "spot of Rage" last Saturday evening. After a brief rain shower that didn't dampen the spirits of the partyphiles, the party started.
Reminiscing the 80's was the theme, the 80's band did play the 80's music and they played it well. Energy, choreography and a high level of performance brought the people dancing on the makeshift dance floor, it was "Dancing in the Streets", remember the Mick Jagger tune of the 80's?
Rage Band's repertoire for the evening was a danceable line-up of tunes. Quite different from the tunes they played. But the mainstream revival Davao is so in love with was a sure hit formula for the performers. It was not surprising to find the prim and proper hoteliers, media and professionals letting their hair down and spearheading the revelry. After all it was the golden age of music and glamour, their generation.
It was bringing back the music and not the fashion for this evening. Even with the absence of 80's glamour, the attendance was superb. Dressed down for the street festivities, the 80's denizens were in full force, and with the hit trend of retro, a case of music crossing over to the next generation, there was a cool mix of party loving crowd.
Well, the streets are coming alive once more. Come Kadayawan month, expect a lot more. Shows, dancing and parties will be giving life to every street corner. It's your choice of who you want to see, who you want to be with and where you want to be. It's time to fly in the night, again.
