Nilo calls for defense chief's courtesy resignation
By Aurea A. Gerundio

DAVAO City Councilor Nilo Abellera sponsored a resolution calling for the courtesy resignation of National Defense Sec. Angelo Reyes following allegations hurled against him by some junior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Abellera, in a privilege speech Tuesday, encouraged the support of his colleagues with the resolution.

Abellera said the failed mutiny in Makati City ten days ago, which the officers claimed was an expression of their protest, created questions and doubts in the minds of Filipinos, especially to Davao City residents.

"It is a very sad story to hear that an organization like the AFP whom we look upon with utmost dignity and integrity had been blemished by serious allegations of corruption, sabotage and conspiracy," he said.

Abellera lamented the "shocking allegations by the mutineers" implicated top officials of the military organization as behind the twin bombings here.

"We suffered economic losses from the bombing incidents and we cannot deny the people here have not yet escaped from the nightmares brought about by the incidents," Abellera said.

He believes the resignation of Reyes will remove any shadow of suspicion of undue influence to the independent investigating body.
