Plantation worker faces attempted murder raps

AN EMPLOYEE of a banana plantation in Calinan, Davao City is facing formal charges of frustrated homicide for allegedly stabbing his neighbor last February.

The complaint was filed by Arestio S. Gayda, 37, of Purok 16, National Highway, Calinan, Davao City against 30-year-old Joel Dequina alias Toto, of the same place.

In his affidavit, Gayda claimed that around 9:30 p.m. February 19, he was resting inside his house after a long day's work when Dequina, his co-worker at Asiapro (an agency of Dole banana plantation) who was apparently under the influence of liquor allegedly started shouting outside his house.

Gayda went out to try to pacify Dequina but the man instead stabbed him with a bladed weapon, hitting him on the shoulder. Gayda said he tried to evade Dequina's attack but he was again hit, this time in the neck and breast.

Dequina fled after members of the Calinan police arrived. Gayda was taken to the Isaac Robillo Memorial Hospital for treatment, but was later transferred to the Davao Medical Center where he was confined for six days.

In his resolution, assistant city prosecutor Victor M. Dumlao held that Dequina's intent to kill was manifested by the knife, which he used in stabbing Gayda and he recommended the filing of information before the court. RCB
