Criminal ring behind village chief's slay

SUSPECTS belonging to criminal syndicates engaged in illegal drug trafficking and illegal logging are being looked into as possibly behind the killing of a barangay captain of Sta. Maria town in Davao del Sur last Tuesday night.

This developed as elements of the Sta. Maria municipal police office continue their manhunt for still unidentified suspects who shot dead Gil Mante, 52, Sto. Niņo barangay captain.

Mante was standing in front of the barangay hall around 8 p.m., when he had a heated argument with two unidentified persons.

A few minutes later, one of the suspects shot Mante using firearm of still undetermined caliber. The victim succumbed to gunshot wounds in the neck.

Jeany, a 12-year-old Grade Six pupil, also sustained gunshot wound in the shoulder from a stray-bullet on her shoulder.

The barangay captain was known for his strong campaign against the drug menace and illegal loggers who operate within the barangay. GPP
