Iligan out to challenge DC in Minda Friendship Games By Marianne L. Saberon
ILIGAN City is out to challenge Davao City in its title-retention bid in the 3rd Mindanao Friendship Games set October 19 to 24 in Mati, Davao Oriental.
Neilwin Bravo, provincial information officer and MFG secretariat-in-charge, announced Iligan's participation during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
"Iligan called us recently and they are sending a full complement, making good its chances to perhaps take the crown from Davao City," Bravo said while making glances at Davao City Sports Development Division officer-in-charge Galvani Yanong, who was seated beside him.
Bravo made mention of Iligan's bid to challenge reigning champion Davao after Yanong bared that a 426-member contingent will compete in the 3rd MFG and seek to defend Davao's crown.
"We already have an initial 426 delegates of athletes, coaches and officials for the Games but we are still counting," Yanong said.
"We are just awaiting the recommendation of other local NSAs to complete our roster of athletes," he added.
The SDD chief said Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte's special assistant Lawrence "Bong" Go told him of the mayor's interest to fully support the athletes seeing action in the Mati meet.
"We are just told to reduce the budget and finalize the program design. Mayor Duterte, as what Mr. Go told me Wednesday, will be giving his full support in anticipation of the delegation's bid to defend its crown," Yanong said.
He added that the city is preparing to field athletes in all 25 events.
City Hall's support in the coming sportsfest for Mindanaoans is a welcome respite considering that the Davao City Unified Team, which won the over-all championship in Cagayan de Oro last year, competed using personal funds and support from the private sector and other sports enthusiasts.
