Parreno, Andoy are favorites
DAVAO City's Brene Parreņo, Jerwell Andoy and candidate National Woman Master Marie Angeli Dimakiling are the early favorites in the coming 2003 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Mindanao leg.
This was according to tournament coordinator James Infiesto, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
Infiesto said University of Mindanao student Parreņo, 17, will be showing his stuff in the juniors event while Andoy and Dimakiling will be at odds in the kiddies side on Saturday and Sunday at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Atrium.
Andoy hogged the limelight recently when he drew with National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz in the Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Open Chess Tournament.
It was in the same event where Dimakiling ruled the women's division to earn the right to represent Davao City in the 3rd Mindanao Friendship Games.
The Mindanao edition of the annual seven-round Swiss System chessfest expects to draw close to 1,000 participants. Over 300 players have registered this early.
Infiesto said seeding of players will be given careful attention, adding, "I'm glad NCFP regional director Ronnie Tabudlong will be assisting us with this concern."
Cash prizes, trophies, medals and slots to the national finals are up for grabs in the two-day chess meet supported by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office, National Chess Federation of the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission. MLS
