GSIS to start processing loan backlogs

AFTER almost three months of waiting, members of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) in Davao whose loan applications were temporarily suspended may now heave a sigh of relief.

This came after GSIS Davao Manager Zenaida Ferrer announced Monday that operations for processing pending applications will resume this Friday, August 15.

Ferrer, who was with other GSIS National officials on Monday's launching of "Parisian Life" exhibit, said they would work on the pending loan applications for about three weeks.

In a separate interview Tuesday, it was learned from GSIS Davao Branch Assistant Manager Ma. Fatima Alvarez that there are about 1,057 availed salary and policy loans filed here, 880 of which are salary loan applications.

Another 1,093 life and retirement claims are awaiting approval here, she added.

"Most of the pending applications are salary loans, while the rest are policy and emergency loans, yung iba naman refunds na lang (others are claims for refund)," Alvarez said.

The office may entertain a new set of applications on the second week of September, the GSIS official said.

GSIS earlier issued a moratorium for salary of other policy loan availments because of massive computerization and overhauling of its systems, among other reasons.

This year alone, about P20 million was spent by GSIS for the new hardware and software installations.

System upgrading and automation was initiated as early as 1998, GSIS Vice President for Public Affairs Mer Nilo Racimo, who was also present on Monday's launching of Luna's "Parisian Life" painting said. CEU
