MBC, Chamber urge gov't to fully back mutiny probe By Christie Enriquez- Uayan
BOTH the Mindanao Business Council (MBC) and the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCI) expressed hope that the Feliciano Commission can uncover the truth behind the failed Makati mutiny on July 27, as they called on the government to grant outright support to the body.
Headed by Retired Supreme Court Justice Florentino Feliciano, the fact-finding commission was formed recently to investigate last week's mutiny, as well as the allegations hurled by the young officers against the military's top brass.
The two business groups here upheld earlier pronouncements by economic experts stating that the probe on the Makati crisis will have a very crucial role in stabilizing the country's economy and regaining investor confidence.
"We hope that this act shall be construed by the international business community as decisiveness and strength on the part of the government, and shall provide a modicum of investor confidence in our country," MBC Chair Joji Ilagan-Bian said in a statement.
Ilagan said efforts to boost the fact-finding commission must be extended by both the Senate and the Congressional bodies.
This, as MBC urged the chambers to provide legislative issuances to make the Feliciano Commission "more effective in its task".
But while doing these, the legislative groups must ensure that no cover-up will take place, Ilagan also stressed.
DCCCI President Romeo Serra, for his part, said the group is worried over the separate probes being done by separate branches of government.
While the groups may have good reasons for doing their respective investigations, Serra said the apparent disharmony might create an impression that "all politics is business as usual, with fierce competition among our politicians as to whose investigation takes precedence, or is more credible, or requires priority."
Members of the Chamber contend that in order to maximize the country's meager resources spent on intelligence and fact-finding probes, the Feliciano Commission should be recognized as having the primary jurisdiction in the Oakwood mutiny investigation.
