RP team starts bid in world junior tennis
DAVAO City's Ralph Kevin Barte-led RP boys team will vie for the prize against 15 other countries in the 13th World Junior Tennis Finals that opened Monday at the TK Plus, Prostejov, Czech Republic.
The Palarong Pambansa 2002 gold medallist Barte, the country's No. 1 under-14 netter, is joined in the team by Manileņos Russel Arcilla Jr. and Pablo Olivarez II with Chris Cuarto at the helm.
Team Philippines will be going up against reigning champion USA, Australia, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Venezuela.
The RP boys team took a slot in the prestigious world event after placing fourth in the Asia/Oceania qualifying tournament in Australia in May.
The six-day net fest will be played on a single round-robin format where a team will play two singles and one doubles rubber matches. The doubles rubber must be completed even if a 2-0 score line is obtained.
Each nation will get to play five other countries.
Juniors & Vets Tennis, ITF, manager Luca Santilli said, "The competition should be very exciting as the standard of all the players is very high this year and so we eagerly await some close ties throughout the week." Russia is seeded No. 1 in the girls category. MLS
