THE Department of Tourism (DOT) has committed to promote the Davao region, along with other cities, as one of the wedding destinations in the country.

Davao, along with Boracay, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Manila and Palawan will be promoted as the ideal honeymoon sites during the duration of the World of Weddings (WOW) activities, a component of the DOT's Wealth of Wonders (WOW) campaign to position the country as a tourism, convention and events hub in Asia.

Targeting not only domestic but foreign couples as well, the DOT and the private sectors, as well the key players in the industry have lined up activities to boost the claim.

The biggest wedding fair in the country and Asia, dubbed as the Wedding Expo Philippines (WedExpo), is slated September 6 to 7 this year at the NBC Tent in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City.

Exhibit organizer Themes and Motifs -- the Special Events, Co. said more than 150 topnotch suppliers from fashion designers, limousine providers, florists, photographers. Service providers for honeymoons destinations, reception venues, among others, will also be present to entice prospective clients.

Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon, who was here in the city on Monday for the Davao-Japan Centennial celebration and historical marker laying said the wedding fair hopes to attract domestic and foreign altar bound couples to exchange "I do's" here in the country through it's attractive yet cheap wedding and honeymoon package rates.

For as low as $399, couples may enjoy a laving wedding ceremony and a breathtaking honeymoon vacation in one of the destinations being promoted by the DOT, including Davao.

In a recent interview, DOT Canada Director Catalina "Kiling" Dakudao told Sun.Star they chose Davao as one of the wedding and honeymoon destinations due to its perfect combination of a rural and urban area.

"Davao could cater to couples with different interests. Pwede silang pumunta sa mga resorts, mag-mountain climbing, or just stay here in hotels and enjoy themselves," she said. CEU
