Army, DENR ink MOA v. illegal logging
By Ben O. Tesiorna

A MEMORANDUM of agreement was entered into between the Army's 36th Infantry Battalion (IB) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to stop illegal logging in the areas of Cateel, Davao Orintal and Compostela, Compostela Valley.

According to Lt. Col. Max Caro, 36th IB commander, the MOA was signed last Tuesday provides for the Army's assistance in implementing the forestry laws in an effort to preserve the forested areas in the two provinces.

Caro said his battalion will assist DENR officials in curbing illegal logging through the establishment of a joint DENR-Army checkpoints in the road connecting Cateel and Compostela.

Caro said the Cateel-Compostela road had been identified as the road frequently traversed by illegal loggers due to its short distance to Davao City.

He said they will implement a "rigid checkpoint" to ensure that no illegally cut logs would pass their way unchecked.

Caro said even though they have not yet started their checkpoints there were reports that illegal loggers have already lied low.

He assured that they will establish more checkpoints along the Compostela-Cateel road.

When asked if they have already identified the identities of these illegal loggers, Caro promised to identify them in due time. BOT
