Army welcomes NPAs' interest in mining By Ben O. Tesiorna
THE Philippine Army will welcome any member of the New People's Army who wish to become legitimate businessman and engage in Diwalwal mining.
This was the reaction made by Lt. Col. Max Caro, Army's 36th IB commander, to the offer of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for the NPAs venture into the mining business than illegally exacting revolutionary taxes from the people.
Caro encouraged the rebels to participate in the mainstream society and join the parliamentary struggle instead of armed struggle.
When asked if they have monitored any rebel that is now into Diwalwal mining, Caro said he heard a lot about it but could not confirm any.
He said most of the rebels engaged in mining were reportedly not keen in rejoining the rebel movement.
But for police and military officers going into mining is however another story. Caro said Defense Sec. Angelo Reyes prohibit such.
He admitted that there were reports that some active and retired military officials are involved in Diwalwal mining but said until now they don't have any solid evidence to support allegations. BOT
