DCWD collected P172.2M in questioned meter rent
By Aurea A. Gerundio

DAVAO City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang Wednesday sought support from his colleagues in the City Council in passing a resolution requesting the Davao City Water District to set aside the water meter rental collection pending the Court of Appeals' decision on the declaratory relief case filed against the company.

Dayanghirang said the water meter monthly rental of P15 had created a furor among the consuming public, thus the filing of a case years ago.

"As of June 2003, DCWD has 136,527 consumers. Multiply this with P15 and you get a total of P2.047 million a month from the pockets of the consuming public," he said.

Dayanghirang added that DCWD collects a total amount of P24.5 million in a year.

"If we multiply this by seven years (referring to the years DCWD started collecting rentals), since water meter rental began in 1997, you get an astounding amount of P172.2 million," he said.

Dayanghirang said DCWD justified the rental collection by saying that the cost of water meter already increased nine-fold since 1974.

"I am seeking the support of my colleagues in the proposed resolution to set aside the rental collection that has accumulated for more than five years so that if we get a favorable decision on the case, the money is intact and can be returned to the consumers including the earned interest," he said.
