Cash incentives pushed for Minda medal winners

TWO sports coordinators from two cities in Mindanao will propose an incentive plan for medallists in the just-concluded 3rd BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games to their respective local government units (LGUs).

Davao Sports Development Division officer-in-charge Galvani Yanong said he will submit program design to the City Mayor's Office for the granting of cash incentives to the city's athletes who powered the region to an over-all first-place finish in the Games held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Mindanao harvested a total of 21 gold medals, 24 silvers and 14 bronzes in the revival of the meet among focus areas in the East Asean Growth Area: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines.

"I will recommend that our athletes be given incentives for their feats in the BIMP-Eaga Games to recognize their efforts and make not just our city proud but the entire Mindanao," Yanong said.

Davao City sent an athletics team, five players to reinforce the Tagum women's volleyball team and one player to beef up Tagum's sepak takraw team.

Tagum City sports coordinator Sally de Guzman, for her part, said she will also make a similar recommendation to their LGU.

De Guzman said: "The cash incentives could at least make the players happy so that they will strive to do better in future competitions." MLS
