Videoke Challenge By Nelson C. Bagaforo
THE Summit Bar of Royal Mandaya Hotel launched another first in Davao City last August 30 -- the wacky Videoke Challenge 2003.
Hosted by foolish, yet witty, stand-up comedians, this singing competition that happens every Saturday not only focuses on voice quality, but performance, as well.
"You (contestants) only need guts," one of the hosts said.
With these comedians grilling the contestants, expect a night of boisterous laughter and not-so-wholesome entertainment. True to their job, these stand up comedians make fun of contestants, and on other days the bar's habitués.
But if this mockery won't be taken seriously, it is just enough to make each contestant homey while on stage.
The launch last Saturday night was a big success. Huge crowd, who just wanted to have fun, packed The Summit Bar. Although the number of contestants in the Videoke Challenge was limited to eight, there were more who wanted to join.
Some contestants were also frivolous, making the crowd roared throughout the night.
The first weekly winner of the competition was a pretty girl named Jennifer who won gift certificates, while non-winners received consolation prizes, all courtesy of the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
Videoke Challenge is open to all Summit Bar customers, but only eight contestants are allowed to join every competition night.
The crowd will serve as the judges. The contestant with the loudest cheers will be proclaimed winner. Cash prizes also await grand prizewinners.
Since the posh Summit Bar was repackaged early this year, a growing number of Dabawenyos gradually appreciated what a stand-up bar is all about.
Regardless of those travesties by the performers, such kind of entertainment gives nothing but all fun.
Performing at The Summit are wacky trio of Ahbet Padilla, a Davao City based stand up comedian, and his counterparts from Manila Mocha and Arnel.
