Galicia doesn't mind losing votes over right decisions

DAVAO City Councilor Emmanuel Galicia said Thursday that he does not mind losing a thousand votes to decisions not favorable to a number of people for as long as he is legally correct.

This developed following the approval of a recommendation by Acting Assistant City Legal Officer Santos Torreņa to deny the request of the Gov. Paciano Bangoy Sitio Dacudao Homeowners Association Inc. to declare Block 3, Lot 1, a 12,863 sq. m. area, registered in the name of Dacudao and Sons, Inc., as permanent resettlement site for association members.

"Maski pa libo ka boto dili ko sayangan basta ba subay ko sa balaod. Dili man ko puwede nga mabayran sa akong prinsipyo. Kung unsa man ang legal, mao ang dapat sundon (I don't mind losing even a thousand votes as long as the law is followed. My principles can't be bought)," he said.

During Tuesday's regular session, Torreņa informed the councilors that the property in dispute has been declared an open space, without indication of specific use, either for community facility or for parks and playground.

"Dili man pud gyud tama ang sa mga petitioners na ilahang ipa-declare nga permanent resettlement site ang kadtong open space sa Dacudao (It's not right for the petitioners to have the Dacudao open space declared as a permanent resettlement site). Anyway, the matter has been referred to the committee on housing for further discussion," Galicia said.

During the session, homeowners' association president Erlinda Reyes said there are about 200 houses set up in the disputed area. Each house has at least two families.

She said there are families paid P3,000 by the Dacudaos to demolish their homes immediately and were also threatened to leave.

The Council approved a resolution passed by Councilor Jimmy Dureza to direct the City Engineer's Office (CEO) to suspend the demolition on some 200 illegal structures within the property in dispute pending a decision. AAG
