Hostage-taker slain, cop hurt in Surigao
A PISTOL-packing man, who took a family hostage in Tubod, Surigao del Norte Wednesday, was killed by authorities in a brief shootout that also left a police official wounded.
Chief Supt. Alberto Olario, Police Regional Office (PRO) 13 director, identified the hostage-taker as Arnulfo Mayormo, 44, resident of Alegria, Surigao del Norte.
Olario said Mayormo was accosted at a military checkpoint for possession of two caliber .45 pistols. The suspect then ran and was chased by the soldiers.
When trapped, the suspect held hostage the family of one Almio Abao. It was not known how many people were held hostage.
A negotiation then ensued to convince the suspect to surrender and ensure the safety of his captives.
Olario said the negotiation dragged on with the suspect giving no indication of surrender.
He said the authorities grappled with Mayormo's two guns but he managed to fire his gun hitting one Senior Supt. Celso Curitana on his legs.
The police were prompted to shoot the suspect hitting him with a fatal shot in the head. BOT
