No coup supporters from Army's 4th ID
By Ben O. Tesiorna and Peng Aliņo

THE chief of the Army's 4th Infantry Division assured Thursday that there are no senior officers under him that are involved in another destabilization plot against the government.

Major Gen. Cristolito Balaoing made the assurance after text messages circulated two days ago about the alleged involvement of five generals in a new plot to overthrow the Arroyo administration.

Balaoing cautioned the public not to believe the text messages, as these are part of a destabilization plot of the enemies.

When asked if they are conducting a loyalty check among their personnel, Balaoing said they are not. He said what they're doing is a routine evaluation of their soldiers every six months.

He also denied that Malacaņang personnel are the ones conducting the evaluation saying they do it by themselves without any help from the Office of the President or the Department of National Defense (DND).

Balaoing said all 9,600 soldiers with 450 officers in the 4th ID are committed to the Constitution.

When asked to comment on the resignation of former defense secretary Angelo Reyes, Balaoing said it did not cause any adverse effects on their men in the field.

He added that with the President acting as the temporary defense secretary they expect better developments.

"Whoever is sitting at the DND does not directly affect us tactically, right now wala naman kaming problema (we don't have problems). Mabuti nga yung presidente ang sya mismong secretary of defense because sigurado tayo na consistent ang policy ng chief executive at DND secretary (It's better that the President is the secretary of defense because we are sure that the policy of the chief executive and the DND secretary are consistent)," he said.
