48 LGUs join Minda Games
By Marianne L. Saberon

A TOTAL of 48 local government units (LGUS) have signified their intent to participate in the 3rd Mindanao Games scheduled from October 19 to 24 in Mati, Davao Oriental.

Philippine Sports commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in-charge for Mindanao, made the announcement in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

Montemayor said Mati vice-chair for the Mindanao Games, Louie Rabat, confirmed to him Wednesday that preparations for the Games are on schedule.

He said there are no more hitches as far as preparations by the host city are concerned.

"The concern that Louie raised was about the Palarong Pambansa being staged earlier than the Mindanao Games," Montemayor said.

But Montemayor said the PSC, through Chairman Eric Buhain, had assured the Mati local government that the Games wouldn't be affected in any way by the holding of the Palaro on the same month in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The turnout of participants in the Games, according to Montemayor, may even exceed expectations with some 300 differently-abled athletes also seeing action in at least four events.

"Commissioner Mike Barredo said 300 or more entries will compete in the tournament for differently-abled athletes. I understand Davao City is among the top teams in this category," said Montemayor, who was joined by PSC regional coordinator Vic Sai in the weekly sports forum co-sponsored by Ad and Promo Management and Tower Inn.

Meanwhile, Montemayor said PSC chief on national grassroots development program Ariel Paredes is arriving to finalize details of the Games.

Events entered are arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, boxing, chess, cycling MTB, dancesport, football, golf, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, pencak silat, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball and weightlifting.
