Davao ready for 3rd MFG By Marianne L. Saberon
DAVAO City gears up for its title-retention bid in the 3rd Mindanao Friendship Games (MFG) slated October 19 to 24 in Mati, Davao Oriental.
Sports Development Division (SDD) officer-in-charge Galvani Yanong said Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte's special assistant Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go told him that the budget proposal for the city's stint in the Games just needs the signature of the Mayor.
"Mr. Bong Go told me Monday night that we will have to speed up our preparations since the budget is already good as okay," Yanong said in an interview Tuesday.
The SDD chief said the city's delegation is composed of 388 athletes, coaches and officials.
The master list of Davao delegates, according to Yanong, will be out soon after he receives the final rosters of dancesport and golf.
Yanong said uniforms, transportation and meal allowances would be provided for the city's delegates.
The delegates will see action in 24 out of 25 events entered in the regional sportsfest that will serve as the qualifying round for the Philippine National Championships next year.
But Yanong said training allowance was not included in the program design.
"Our athletes were selected and most of them underwent the qualifying tournaments. The budget allotted for them only caters to the entire duration of the meet and not before that," he said.
Davao will compete in arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, boxing, chess, cycling MTB, dancesport, football, golf, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, pencak silat, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and volleyball.
Forty-eight local government units (LGUs) have confirmed this early to join the Games.
A Mindanao Games technical assembly is set on September 15 and 16 in Mati. It will be attended by top Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) officials, LGU sports coordinators, National Sports Association (NSA) representatives and host officials.
