Bimp-Eaga vows unity, explores other markets
By Christie Enriquez- Uayan

MEMBERS of the East Asean Growth Area (Eaga) composed of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines are planning to consolidate its products and explore other markets to achieve better income from exports and speed up its goal of creating a niche in the international market.

Heads of delegation of the Bimp-Eaga member countries, in Thursday's culmination of the 11th Senior Officials Meeting (Som), agreed to merge their products and pursue other markets such as Korea, Japan and China.

"Bimp-Eaga is rich in natural resources and we are looking at China and other countries to market our products," Dato Halipa Bte. Esa, deputy director general of Malaysia's Economic Planning Unit, said Thursday.

East Asean Business Council (EABC) vice chair Joji Ilagan -Bian, for her part, said that Bimp-Eaga countries have the potential to command the international market once it consolidates its products.

"If we can achieve greater volume and better quality products, then we can create a niche within the huge markets internationally such as China, US and Europe," she said.

Countries within the growth triangle are predominantly agricultural, producing almost the same products such as rice, corn, rubber, tuna, coconut, among many others.

Efforts to promote Bimp-Eaga as a single tourism destination have already been brought up by the cooperation's working group on joint tourism development.

The working group has also been created a task force on Joint Research Program chaired by Indonesia to study on eco-tourism development in the Eaga.
