Region set to supply coco diesel to Japan By Christie Enriquez-Uayan
REGION 11 is gearing up to become the major supplier of coconut diesel in Japan, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) 11 Manager Lornito Orillaneda said Tuesday.
Coconut methyl ester, the scientific name for coco diesel, is mainly used as an additive to the petroleum diesel to rid the engine of motor vehicles of pollutants.
"Kung diesel lang ang gamiton sa sakyanan, mag-emit gyud ug pollutants such as carbon monoxide and others. But now with the coco diesel, pasado sa smoke emission test ang mga motor vehicles (With the coco diesel as additive motor vehicles can readily pass the smoke emission tests)," Orillaneda explained as he stressed the need to intensify efforts to clean the air.
Orillaneda said the memorandum of agreement is soon to be inked by Trend Foundation and Allied Pacific Corporation of Japan through its President Moriyaki Hayashida.
"The Japanese representatives have come here to visit and observe the process of making the additive and they have proven through testing that it is indeed effective," he said, adding that the by product of the petro and coco diesel mixture is carbon dioxide which is beneficial to plant.
The coco diesel manufactured in the region has already passed the standards set by the Japanese Department of Energy.
He said Hayashida's company would be in charge of marketing the products to Japan while Trend Foundation will serve as the exporters of the product.
The PCA 11 chief said the agreement has been finalized and the MOA signing was about to take place if not for the two bombings that hit the city in March and April.
The two parties have reset the signing within this month, the exact date of which Orillaneda said is yet to be confirmed.
Moves to advocate the use of environment-friendly products have been going strong recently, Orillaneda said. This makes the coco diesel a sought after commodity especially among nations such as Japan, the United States, and several countries in Europe.
The Filipino Oil Corporation in Bajada, Davao City is the sole firm accredited by the PCA to make coco diesel. Its brand name Green Diesel, is sold at P60 per liter.
