Davao pugs in Bohol slugfest
A 13-MEMBER Davao City team will compete in the National Youth Boxing Championships in Tagbuilaran, Bohol next week.
Davao trainer Ronnie Sumampong said the city is fielding 10 amateur boxers in the annual competition for 18 years old and under players.
"Most of our boxers are competing for the first time in the national championships but they have very strong chances in their respective weight categories," Sumampong said in the vernacular during an interview at the city sports office Friday.
Sumampong said University of Mindanao (UM) varsity mainstays Dave Ang and Lordvemen Bautista, who won a silver medal in the 2003 National Open in Palalawan, will lead the cast for Davao's bid in the slugfest.
Ang is entered in the flyweight category while Bautista will see action in mini-flyweight.
They will be joined in the team by pinweight Erico Nograles National High School's Roy Floro, Guiller Ramos, lightweight Mike Merafuentes, Reymar Diamale, Chorino Quiapo, bantamweight Alexis Marvin Alegria, Rodel Ranpog and Mushulene Luceņara.
The coaching staff includes coach Rolando Orosio and Leogene Siodina.
The Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office is funding Davao team's participation in the tournament.
Cebu City and Cebu Province bets are among the early favorites. MLS
