5 blast suspects to be arraigned

FIVE detained suspects formally charged with multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder are to be arraigned Tuesday before Judge Paul T. Arcangel of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 12.

The five were detained in connection with the bombings of Davao International Airport (DIA) and Sasa port.

Judge Arcangel will proceed with the arraignment after the previous motions filed by the suspects were already resolved by the court.

The five who were charged for the twin bombings that killed 37 people and injured 170 others were identified as: Esmael Usop Mamalangkas of Maragapas Street, Cotabato City; To Musa Akmad alias Esmael Akmad of Barangay Gambar, Kabuntalan, Maguindanao; Tohami Urong Bagundang alias Jabi Urong of Guiwa, Kabuntalan, Maguindanao; 17-year-old Jimmy (surname withheld for being a minor) of Cotabato City; and Teng Idar of Matampay, Parang, Maguindanao.

Also charged with the five suspects were 190 others who remain at large.

Akmad and Bagundang were arrested in Almonte Extention, Cotabato City last April 8 as a result of a hot pursuit operation conducted by a joint team of PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The arrest of the two subsequently led to the arrest of Idar, Jimmy and Mamalangcas the following day in their safehouse in Buliao Uno, Cotabato City.

Bagundang earlier claimed in an extra-judicial confession that Mamalangkas and Akmad were active members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Threat Group under the over-all command of the late Hashim Salamat.

Jimmy, on the other hand, said he was just instructed to place the package at the DIA waiting shed and claimed that he did not know the package contained a bomb.

The suspects later denied involvement in the bombings, claiming that they were just implicated and tortured to admit the crimes they did not commit. RCB
