Double red alert up in Sasa wharf

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) placed the Davao City port on double alert status after receiving threats of a possible terrorist attack by the Abu Sayyaf group.

PPA police chief Rolly Dilao said that members of the Task Force Pantalan would convene Wednesday to assess and evaluate the situation at Sasa port.

Dilao said intelligence reports indicated that the Abu Sayaf group is planning to attack the port.

"The tightness of the security at the port, especially during every arrival of ships, is just similar to when before the bomb explosion occurred near the gate of the Sasa port," Dilao said.

Dilao said that after receiving intelligence reports regarding the bomb threats, the port police are on the double alert status.

"We have 38 security guards here. But we also get security assistance from different government agencies like Customs and Coast Guards," he said.

Dilao also urged various shipping line operators to attend the meeting to discuss matters on security.

"We are really implementing tight security measures. Before a passenger enters the ship, he or she will undergo a stern process of inspection to control properly and identify legitimate passengers," Dilao said. AAG
