Tagum embarks P120-M water supply improvement
By Christie Enriquez- Uayan

THE P120 million water supply enhancement project in Tagum is set to be implemented next year is not only beneficial to its residents, moreover, it is expected to improve the area's investment and business climate, Tagum Water District Chief Norma Pereyras said in an interview Monday.

Pereyras, who is also the Chairperson for the Davao del Norte Chamber of Commerce, said the presence of a good and reliable source of potable water is an added come-on to prospective investors in the province.

Davao del Norte Provincial Administrator Rufo Peligro in an earlier interview admitted there were some lost investment and business opportunities due to the less reliable water supply in Davao del Norte, especially in Tagum.

Pereyras, however, downplayed its adverse effects, saying, "Marami ngang nagi-invest kahit hindi ganoon ka ganda ang quality ng water sa amin."

She added that apart from the many Tagum residents, the food processing industries, as well as the banana plantations in Davao del Norte require huge volume of water everyday.

The Tagum Water District and the local government units of the province tied up with the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) for the water expansion, rehabilitation, and exploration project, which was approved on September 12, 2003.

Of the amount, about P50 million is intended for the tapping of new water sources while the remaining P 70 million, she said, is spent for the expansion and development program.

The project site is located in Panas, New Corella and thousands of households are hoping to benefit from it.

To date, TWD serves at least 16,000 households in Tagum.

A feasibility study to determine the volume of additional water supply that can be generated by the project was done last month.

One October 24, the engineering team from LWUA is expected to arrive in
Panas, New Corella to make the project design.
