Taiwan trade mission, visits on October 13-18 By Christie Enriquez-Uayan
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) Roberto Teo, Trade and Industry 11 Chief Merly Cruz, and some businessmen from Davao City, Cotabato, and Tagum, are set to go to Tai Chung in Taiwan on October 13 to 18 for a trade mission and factory visit.
The businessmen and city officials' visit to Taiwan hopes to strengthen trade relations between Davao City and Tai Chung, DTI 11 Information Techology and Resource Generation Senior staff Dina Bandayanon said Monday.
The city is keen on the possibility of inking a sisterhood agreement with emphasis on trade and investment, the terms of which are still being discussed, with the city government of Tai Chung through its chief executive Jason Hu.
A DCIPC representative who refused to be named, in an interview said businessmen in Taichung are interested to pour in capital in the city for the setting up of food processing plants.
"Tai Chung is the food processing center in Taiwan and since nakita nila that we in Davao City have the raw materials, they would want to come here and invest," the DCIPC employee said, adding that there are a number of Taiwanese investments in the city in the agribusiness sectors.
Besides, the agri-business, the DCIPC is mulling to present investment opportunities in the city in the fields of property development, light manufacturing, transshipment facilities, tourism facilities, telecommunication, establishment of foreign banks, medical, educational training and sports facilities, and environmental protection and enhancement projects.
The city is hopeful to attract more investments from Taiwan as it goes in line with Taiwan's Go South policy which encourages enterprising Taiwanese to infuse capital in the "south", the Philippine's location.
Some businessmen, however, are to go to Taiwan for a factory visit, Bandayanon said.
It could be noted that the DTI 11 wanted to hold the Techno Machinery Fair, where makers or sellers of industrial equipment are invited to answer the needs of the region's SMEs.
The fair, was however, postponed following the Taiwanese businessmen's request that SME owners in the region visit their factories before buying these.
