The delectable durian By Ana Felicia Dulay
THE recent deluge of durian fruit in Davao City is a boon to all durian lovers. The price has become more affordable, unlike in the past years, when only tourists and rich out-of-towners can afford this king of fruits. But times have indeed changed. Now, your P100 goes a long way in savoring this delectable delight.
A case in point is the ongoing Durian Festival along F. Torres St., Davao City. More than 15 exhibitors lined up their stalls outside the sprawling area of the Davao Trade and Convention Center.
Whafts of this heavenly fruit permeate the air as at the center of the lined booths, a dining area with tables and chairs are available for durian afficionados. Mangosteen and lanzones also line some booths but taking the center stage is of course, this famous fruit with its heady smell. Durian pastries, jam and candies also abound most of the booths.
Originally, the Durian Festival was slated to run for one month, from Sept. 1 to 30. Due to insistent demand, the fair was extended for one week more.
Here are some nutritional information about durian, according to a leaflet distributed by SunGee, also among the exhibitors.
Did you know that for every 100 grams edible portion of durian contain: 124 calories, 66.8 moisture (percent), 2.5 grams of protein, 1.6 grams of fat, 28.3 total carbohydrates, 1.6 fiber, 0.80 ash, 20 mg calcium, 63 mg phosphorus, .90 mg iron, 1 mg sodium, 601 mg potassium, 10 mg beta-carotene, 0.27 mg vitamin B1, 0.29 mg vitamin B2 and 57 mg vitamin C.
Ironically, durian flooded the market only after the Kadayawan Festival. One of the exhibitors, Mary Grace Beliviz of Rosario Fruitshop, said harvest depends on the weather. Sunny weather is conducive for fruits, while lots of rain is good for vegetables. Ms. Beliviz, an agriculturist, said durian easily matures when there is ample sunshine. "Hindi naman yung masyadong sobra," she said. It is expected that durian lovers will continue to enjoy the fruit for the next three months.
Durian stalls outside Magsaysay Park also abound, with incredibly low prices. For those durian afficionados, savor the luscious fruit now.
