Haribon reps set to visit bats
REPRESENTATIVES from the environmental group Haribon Foundation will be arriving Tuesday in Davao City to brief farmers on the Golden-crown flying foxes or "kabogs" at the Malagos watershed following its discovery last week, Councilor Leo Avila III said Monday.
"Together with the personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), they will conduct lecture to the farmers in Malagos on the advantages they could get from these bats so they will stop killing them," Avila said.
Avila said these type of bats found in Malagos are "endemic in the Philippines and considered one of the biggest and heaviest bats in the world."
"These bats can help on reforestation because of the droppings. However, tan-awon pud nato kung paano maagapan ang pagkadaut sa tanom hilabi na ang mga fruit-bearing trees (but we also have to see how to minimize the damage they inflict on fruit-bearing trees)," he said.
Avila earlier urged these bats be protected from farmers, who slaughter them because they allegedly damage fruit-bearing trees.
"Its population is endangered. Per initial reports gathered, these endangered bats are slaughtered by farmers and sold at P100 for three pieces. A farmer could hunt as many as 30 heads per night," Avila said.
Avila appealed to the public to refrain from buying slaughtered bats so as to discourage their continued slaughter. AAG
