Toddler dies, 5 hurt as truck hits shanty

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD child died while her mother and four other siblings are in serious condition after a cargo truck hit their house in Purok 14, Tibungco, Davao City Monday morning.

Arlene Tapdasan was declared dead at the Davao Medical Center while her mother Evelyn, 34, three sisters, Anne, 12, Jenny, 9, Tina, 3, (real names withheld for being minors) and her week-old baby brother are in serious condition.

Three other houses were smashed but the Tapdasan residence was the hardest hit.

The tragic accident occurred while Evelyn's husband was away at work. Initial investigation stated the victims were in deep slumber around 4:45 a.m. when a Fuso Forward truck with plate number THN-350 crashed onto the roadside shanties.

The truck is owned by Julieto Mejos, a resident of Bonifacio St., Davao
City and driven by one Fernando Alo, 34, of Tahimik Drive, Bangkal, Davao City.

The truck, loaded with bananas was on its way to Davao del Norte. The driver reportedly fell asleep while driving. Alo is presently detained at the Bunawan police station.
