DC's Macala, Yu, Bacus pace Double D chessfest

DAVAO City bets Aki Macala, National Master "Dragon" Yu and Dharim Bacus led after four rounds in the 3rd Mayor's Cup Charter Anniversary Mixed Masters Open Chess Tournament in Koronadal City Monday.

Macala scored perfect four points while 3rd Mindanao Games-bound Yu and Bacus each has 3.5 points together with Elias Banguiran and Pagadian City's Ernesto Fernandez.

Fellow Dabawenyos John Ritter Belocura and 1st Mindanao Friendship Games silver medallist Jimmy Dano earned 3.0 points apiece along with four others to remain in contention.

The fifth round was still ongoing as of presstime in the Swiss System format chessfest that ends today.

Attractive cash prizes are on tap for the winners with the champion taking home a cash prize of P12,000 while the runner-up will receive P10,000 and third placer will get P7,000 with trophies.

Cash prizes P5,000 and P3,000 will go to the fourth and fifth placers, respectively while P1,000 each will be awarded to the sixth to 10th finishers.

The chess meet also drew participants from General Santos City, Cotabato, Kidapawan City, Tagum City, Digos City and Davao del Norte, among others.

It is presented by the City Government of Koronadal in coordination with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
