Trade and investments in Tawi-tawi enhanced By Christie Enriquez- Uayan
IN AN effort to improve the lives of the more or less 322, 317 residents of Tawi-Tawi, both the government and private sectors have intensified trade and investment initiatives on the area, Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) Executive Director Eufemia Calderon said over the weekend.
Calderon, in a presentation during the recent 14th Mindanao Membership Meeting, said even with its abundant natural resources, Tawi-Tawi ranks as the 3rd among the poorest provinces in the country.
Both the private and government institutions have deemed it necessary to maximize these resources to the advancement of the area, she said.
To date, trade and investment initiatives in Tawi-tawi include the launching of Badjao handicraft project, organization of local Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) Council on Bongao and Simunul and the formulation of Tawi-Tawi seaweeds cluster plan.
The Department of Science and Technology, she said, has also started with that training for the development of the seaweeds industry.
About 70 percent of the seaweeds on Western Mindanao that are exported on the various parts of the world are sourced from Tawi-Tawi.
To enhance and improve the trade relations between Tawi-Tawi and its neighbors, a sisterhood agreement among the chambers of commerce of Bongao (Tawi-Tawi, Philippines), Tarakan (Indonesia), and Tawau (Malaysia)- triangular growth area was established operating under the framework of Bimp-Eaga.
