Barte hot in int'l tennis
DARK horse Ralph Kevin Barte of Davao City seeks to extend his winning run when he goes up against Michael Adrian Basco Wednesday in the ongoing Enervon Tablet-Futures Foundation International Juniors Tennis Championships at the Ynares Socio-Civic Center in Pasig City.
Barte booted out Taiwanese Yu Yen-Sheng 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in boys singles to arrange an encounter with Basco, who earlier shutout Jose Lorenzo Opulencia 6-0, 6-0.
Barte, the 14-year-old RP national juniors team member, said: "Naglisod ko sa Taiwanese kay 17 years old na siya pero naga-leading ko, wala lang nako masara ang second set (I had a hard time against my opponent because he's already 17 years old. But I was leading our match, I was just not able to close out the second set)."
Barte, a 9th So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation awardee, said he expects a tough contest against Basco.
"Senior man sa akoa si Basco sa Philippine Team pero maningkamot gihapon ko (Basco is my senior in the RP team but I will still do my best)," said former Rizal Memorial Colleges standout Barte.
In other matches, unheralded Miguel Lorenzo Narvaez also pulled off a 6-3, 6-2 upset win over fifth-seed Janji Soquino to advance against Nico Riego De Dios who scored a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Pablo Olivarez II.
Top-seed Laurence Magaway routed compatriot Raymond Villarete 6-3, 6-1 to force a match-up against Korean Choi Woo-Whuk who demolished Angelo Patrimonio 6-1, 6-0.
Arithmetico Lim downed Carlo Christian Canlas 6-3, 6-3 while Nestor Celestino Jr. outplayed Kyle Joshua Dandan 7-6 (2), 6-3. MLS
