Mixed fortunes for Davao bets in Bohol slugfest By Marianne L. Saberon
UNIVERSITY of Mindanao mainstays Lordvemen Bautista and Dave Ang saved the day for Davao City after beating their respective rivals in the elimination round of the National Youth Boxing Championships in Tagbilaran, Bohol Monday night.
Bautista outclassed hometown bet Arnold Antojo of Bohol-A in the 48 kgs. via points while Ang conquered Jeffrey Emilia of Bago City in a referee-stopped contest (RSC) in the third round of the 51 kgs. division.
Bautista, Palawan 2003 National Open silver medallist, will next meet Bernardo Dolorosa of Cadiz City while Ang will next battle Alvin Pabayos of Dumaguete City Wednesday.
But five other Davao bets -- Reymar Diamale, Rodel Dampog, Charino Quiapo and Roy Floro -- were not as lucky when they succumbed to their rivals.
Diamale bowed to Mandaue City bet Jessie Basaca via points in the 37 kgs., Dampog was subdued by Milan Milindo of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) in 40 kgs. while Quiapo lost to Bago City entry Reymund Toledo via walkover in 41 kgs. and Floro fell into the hands of CDO pug Rodel Emboy in the 45 kgs.
Davao City's Guiller Ramos, Brashary Ali Cali and Alexis Marvin Alegria were scheduled to climb the ring for their first bouts as of presstime.
Ramos was to fight Sammy Laput of Mandaluyong City in the 36 kgs., while promising Cali was to collide with BJ Dolorosa of Cadiz in 42 kgs. Alegria will go up against Brian Rosal of Lapu-Lapu City in 54 kgs.
Lightweight Mike Merafuentes and Mushulene Luceņara have yet to see action for the Davao City boxing team coached and trained by Ronnie Sumampong, Rolando Orosio and Leogene Siodina.
Their participation in the annual event sanctioned by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is funded by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
