City mulls night market
By Christie Enriquez-Uayan

BANKING on the success of the setting up of night markets in Cebu and elsewhere in the world, a night market is to be established in Davao City from November 28 to December 25 this year, businessman Peter Lat announced Wednesday.

According to the businessman, the main objective of the activity is to promote the competitiveness of Davao region- based small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

"We want to train the SMEs in the region to become world class by availing of technology and other services to improve their products," Lat told reporters in an interview.

He said 70 stalls will be up for occupation by SMEs in Davao region, Cebu and from other places in Mindanao.

The market, opposite to the common markets operating in the city, will be open from 5 pm to 2 am.

Priority sectors are those involved in exporting fashion accesories, furnitures, lamps and other products.

About 10 percent of the exhibitors will be coming from Cebu, he said.

The area is known to be one of the best makers and exporters of furnitures and wood products in the country.

Lat said one of the goals of the Cebu exporters is to help Dabawenyos in improving their products, assist in making an effective business plan for prospective exporters and train them to become world class SMEs.

Before allowing Davao and Mindanao-based SMes to join the trade fair, Lat said they will screen their products first to ensure its quality and craftsmanship.
