Davao's Macala wins Mixed Masters title

UNHERALDED Aki Macala proved he has what it takes to be a champion after besting his rivals in the 3rd Mayor's Cup Charter Anniversary Mixed Masters Open Chess Tournament that came to a close in Koronadal City Tuesday night.

Macala tallied six points along with fellow Dabawenyos Reynaldo Quiñones and Dharim Bacus but he got higher tiebreaks for the top plum.

Quiñones and Bacus settled for second and third place, respectively. National University Games-bound Henry Lopez of the Holy Cross of Davao College came fourth with 5.5 points in theseven-round Swiss System format chessfest.

Henry dela Cruz, Panabo National Master (NM) Cedric Magno, Davao City's 2001 Mindanao Friendship Games silver medallist Jimmy Dano, Ric Portogalera, Crisencio Lade and Lito Concepcion made the top 10 list with five points apiece.

A total cash prize of P42,000 were awarded to the winners with the champion taking home P12,000 and the runner-up settling for P10,000.

Trophies and medals were also given away in the four-day meet organized by the city government of Koronadal and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines Region 11.
