Gov't, Canada extend P76M for DIDP projects
By Christie Enriquez-Uayan

A TOTAL of P76 million to fund the various projects of the five cities and four provinces covered by the Davao Integrated Development plan (DIDP) has already been granted by the government and the Philippines-Canada Development Fund (PCDF), executive director Wendel Avisado of the project monitoring office said Tuesday.

"The President has approved the P30 million as of last month," Avisado said, adding the amount is intended for the additional funding of the integrated food security program of the DIDP.

The amount will be used for the construction of the farm to market roads and will be coursed through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Members of the DIDP gathered in Davao City Tuesday for a board meeting held simultaneously with the launching of the Wow Davao presentation in Intramuros next month.

First to third tranches of the projects under the integrated food security program were already completed as of November 2002, with P215.016 million released to the LGUs.

The budget was able to finance the construction of 53 farm-to-market road projects with 148.62 kilometers and 81 linear meter bridge components.

Another 12 small irrigation development projects were also funded by the said amount.

Meanwhile, another P46 million is to be provided by the PCDF to fund the upland farming model villages project.

"It is similar to the project implemented by the Upland Development Program (UDP) but the difference is that those program if financed by the PCDF. UDP, on the other hand, is funded by the European Union.

Components of the project include backyard poultry and hog raising and micro lending to qualified farmers who are living below poverty line.

Avisado, however, stressed that in order to avail of the programs, the farmers should organize themselves into a cooperative.

The DIDP official said the organization is at the moment keeping busy to do physical integration as well as "focusing on and integrating projects for a specific purpose".

Program areas of the DIDP include peace and order, disaster preparedness, trade and industry, tourism, infrastructure, telecommunication, education, agriculture and fisheries.
