Council body inspects Ma-a carbon factory By Aurea A. Gerundio
THE City Council committee on environment and natural resources conducted an ocular inspection Tuesday at Premium AC Corporation, a carbon-manufacturing plant in Ma-a to check whether or not the corrective measures set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were strictly followed.
"Kung makita sa team nga grabe gihapon ang violation sa environmental rules, we will sustain the recommendation to close the company," committee chair Councilor Beethoven Orcullo said before the team of inspectors went to the site.
Orcullo has expected the Premium AC Corporation to have implemented the corrective measures considering that the same company was notified several months back already.
Earlier, Premium AC was petitioned by residents nearby for eliciting black dust particles, which the residents claimed hazardous to their health.
However, the management of Premium AC contested such claim saying that the carbon that their company is manufacturing is a filter.
"It cleanses instead of polluting the atmosphere. There is no way it can be a threat to life, public health, safety or general welfare. This is proven by the fact that our workers, who are directly involved in making the carbon have been working for seven years or more and they are healthy," Premium AC president Michael Ang said in a letter to Business Bureau Erwin Alparaque obtained by Sun.Star Davao earlier.
