Matillano back as CIDG chief By Gwen P. Posadas
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- PNP Director Hermogenes Ebdane ordered Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Eduardo Matillano to return to his post.
Matillano went on indefinite leave immediately after the hostage drama inside the CIDG building at Camp Crame on October 7, killing three policemen.
"I already ordered the reinstatement of Matillano tomorrow (Tuesday)," Ebdane said in an interview on Monday.
Ebdane hinted that the incident was the fault of those who were killed, thus Matillano can stay on.
Matillano tendered his indefinite leave after a bombing suspect detained in the CIDG headquarters grabbed his guard's rifle and engaged responding policemen to a gunfight killing SPO1 Promencio Lafuente, PO2 Arvin Garces and PO2 Ace Garcia.
Ebdane said they have investigated the incident and determined that there was neglect on the part of the slain policemen.
"There could have been laxity on the NUP (non-uniformed personnel), but they're dead, so wala na silang responsibility," Ebdane said.
Buyungan Bungkak, a suspect in the October 18, 2002 bombing incident in Zamboanga City, reportedly grabbed the firearm of his escort inside his detention cell at the CIDG building, killed three policeman and injured two others as he fled with a hostage to the nearby business concerns division office.
Meanwhile, Ebdane said that revamp in different police offices in the country still continues. Earlier, the CIDG had a major revamp in Luzon, Vizayas and Mindanao.
"We are still doing it (revamp), and we based it on the capability of the officer," Ebdane said adding that the revamp will probably end in November.
