"I JUST got lucky," newly-crowned 2003 Davao Open Chess Championship titlist, National Master (NM) Kaharudin Tayuan, said after receiving his trophy and P7,000 cash prize at the SM City Davao South Gallery late Monday afternoon.

The 43-year-old Tayuan, who hails from Boulevard, was joined by his wife Bernadette and two of his five children in the final day of competition.

He had a photo opportunity with tournament sponsor, Philippine Sports Commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor, during the awarding ceremonies.

Tayuan forced a draw with eventual third-placer, candidate master (CM) Julius Sinangote of Metro Manila, after 35 moves of a Caro-Kann Defense to earn a total of 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss System format chessfest.

"This is my first championship since 2000. It may have taken me a long time but I'm very glad to have won this tournament. And I am proud to be a Muslim," Tayuan said in the vernacular.

Tayuan said he wished to represent Davao City in the coming 3rd Mindanao Games slated in Mati, Davao Oriental.

"It was unfortunate because just I finished fourth place. I lost in the tiebreaks," Tayuan said, referring to the qualifying tournament for the Minda Games.

Sinangote scored 6.0 points along with another Davao NM Samuel Yu but the latter edged him for the runner-up honors due to higher tiebreaks.

Gerald Cavan of Panabo City and 2001 Mindanao Friendship Games silver medallist Jimmy Dano took the fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Toril's Arnel Nino Aton, NM Roger Sarif of Cotabato City, Werner Priete of Davao, NM Prospero "Bebot" Cruz and CM Dharim Bacus completed the top 10 finishers.

A total of 86 woodpushers in the region competed in the three-day meet officiated by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under regional director Ronnie Tabudlong.

It was held in coordination with the Metro Davao Chess Association.
