Wildcats dominate Brokenshire in Gaisano South Cup
MULTI-TITLED University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats pulverized Brokenshire College, 109-70, to grab their fifth straight victory without a loss in the 1st Gaisano South Cup basketball tournament at the SkyGym Sunday night.
The Wildcats, coached by Manny Nitorreda, were led by Jasper Callo, who canned in 28 points, grabbed eight rebounds, came away with three steals and issued two assists. His feat earned for him the best player of the game honors.
The Wildcats, toting a 5-0 record, are now locked in a head-to-head duel with reigning champion Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders with a 6-0 slate in the collegiate division 1.
The University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) scourged Davao Doctors College, 102-80, to remain on top in division 2 with a 5-0 card.
USEP's Wilfredo Ronquillo led the attack converting 28 markers with eight rebounds, three steals and one assist in the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP)-sanctioned cagefest.
In the juniors division, Davao City National High School edged Agro-Industrial Foundation College, 74-73, with Elbert Fuentes and Al Etcuban sharing best player of the game honors.
Fuentes had 23 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals while Agro teammate Etcuban added 22 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one block shot and one steal.
DCNHS has a 4-1 card for third place in the standings while 5-1 Agro is second to bracket leader 6-0 Ateneo de Davao University.
The Stella Maris Academy of Davao downed Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), 67-53, in mini while HCDC cadet team crushed University of the Immaculate Conception, 70-59. Holy Child School of Davao toyed with the hapless Davao Central High School, 117-49, in another cadet match.
Tournament director Adrian Manila said they are now accepting entries to the GS Cup All-Star Weekend three-point shootout; two-ball contest and slam-dunk competition.
The All-Star Weekend is set November 8 and 9. MLS
