Bomex outguns Philcom five in Bonguyan By Jet Encila
A DIZZYING barrage of three-pointers and a streak of steals rattled Philcom in the final minutes of play and succumbed to Bomex, 81-77, in the 5th Vice Mayor's cagefest at the Stella Maris gym.
Bomex fought hard against Philcom's massive Remolar-Oliver-Paz trio in the rebound battle who kept them from grabbing easy rebounds. Two consecutive steals by Bomex off a loose ball gave them a 24-19 lead in the first quarter.
Philcom responded by throwing its weight around to intimidate the young and lanky Bomex defenders who were then forced to shoot from the outside.
Bomex' Alex Lu led his team with 25 points, followed by Marco and Marvin Te, who combined with 32 points.
Team leader Bombet Te had 11, coming mostly on sporadic baskets courtesy of give-and-go plays by his teammates.
Philcom struggled with lapses early in the game but kept a steady offense when hitman Peter Isla began connecting his shots while James Paz eagerly worked on the boards.
After a 44-38 halftime lead by Bomex, Eugene Chiong unleashed a 10-point salvo of his 25 markers to temporarily hold off Bomex who squandered two ball possessions halfway in the third quarter.
Peter Isla had 6 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a fade-away shot to put them close at 68-65.
A pair of treys plus two steals by Bombet Te gave the graphic-artists a 73-67 lead with only four minutes left to play.
Jojo Remolar, triple-teamed most of the time by the bigger Bomex defenders, then converted a strong jump-hook to move them close at 79-77. That was Philcom's last shot as Bomex sealed the win with a quick two-point basket in the perimeter.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) under regional director Regino Cua with Boy Te as director and Aye Capili as secretary. Action resumes Saturday at the Ladislawa Gym in Buhangin.
