DCWD exec defends drillings in Dumoy
By Christie Enriquez-Uayan

AMID criticisms from Davao City lawmakers, an official of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) had insisted the water utility's move to extract the City's water supply by drilling some parts of the Dumoy area is the wisest and cheapest way of supplying the City's water needs.

"The most rational way of doing it is through digging a well. With the P2.5 million that we spent through drilling wells, we could service about 5,000 households," DCWD Commercial Manager Dominador Lopez said.

He said at least P4.3 billion is needed for tapping surface water and redistributing it to several households in the City.

Lopez' reaction stemmed from Councilor Liborio Lumain's proposed resolution
requesting the City to impose a moratorium of all water pump drillings.

Lumain, in a privileged speech Tuesday, said the drilling and digging activities by DCWD endangers the environment due to its failure to secure an Environment Assessment Impact study from the Department of Environment Natural Resources (DENR).

Councilor Diosdado Mahipus also said wells no. 10 and 14 in Dumoy and Talomo areas are the replacements of two of the DCWD wells that had dried up.

Lopez denied there are wells in Dumoy areas that had dried up, saying the area has perhaps the most abundant water source in the city.

"Even if we drill up to 300 meters deep in some areas, water does not come out. In Dumoy, potential water sources are located within seven to 120 meters," Lopez explained.
