Diggings start at Artica Dome
By Aurea Gerundio

THE Task Force Artica Sports Dome on Wednesday started the exploratory diggings on specific areas of the mothballed multi-million peso structure to see if there are indeed reinforcement steel bars bent to conform to a misaligned layout, as alleged by sub-constructors.

Wednesday's diggings, however, did not show anything conclusive.

Allan Botuyan, representative from the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (Asep), said the Task Force initiated not only the diggings, but also identifying the vertical alignment of all 20 columns.

While Botuyan toured members of the Task Force and of the local media around the dome, he also identified sections F1 and C11 where diggings will be made to find out the truth behind allegations of bent bars and poor foundation.

"Section F1 is located outside of the dome. Base sa plan, one meter lang ang dapat i-dig. Kung mo-sobra na sa one meter, that would only mean that there was a deviation from the original plan. Sa C11 naman, which is located indoor, thickness of the foundation ang i-check kasi may allegation of inappropriate engineering procedure sa footing," Botuyan said adding that proposed thickness is 850 millimeters.

Checking the back portion of the dome, Botuyan noticed some misalignment of columns although he said this does not pose any threat to the foundation.

"It is not dangerous if there is misalignment. But, it should not be far from the allowable measure of misalignment," Botuyan said.

Task Force chief Melchor Quitain earlier said investigation of the allegations regarding structural defects will soon be completed once the diggings will be through.
