Wildcats claw HCDC, 75-46
By Marianne L. Saberon

MULTI-titled University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats preyed on the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders, 75-46, in the 1st Gaisano South Cup Wednesday night at the SkyGym.

Best player of the game Eder Saldua led the Manny Nitorreda-coached Wildcats with 24 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block shot.

"Samigue Eman was outstanding in defense while Saldua led us in offense.

Calimpong was a revelation when he performed on both ends. But it was total team effort," said Nitorreda.

The Wildcats coach said it was sheer luck on their part and that the Crusaders were "off" in their game.

The win gave the Wildcats a 8-0, win-loss record to lead the team standings of the collegiate division 1 while perennial rival Crusaders dropped to the second spot.

Nitorreda, however, said the game was a no-bearing match and was not a sure glimpse of the titular showdown ahead.

"Both teams are already assured of top two positions for the semi-finals. HCDC is still the team to beat and the top-seed," Nitorreda said.

The boxscores:
UM 76 - Saldua 24, Eman 9, Calimpong 9, Callo 8, Decena 5, Orquia 4, Potolin 4, Birondo 2, Magat 2, Nul 2
HCDC 56 - Bower 12, Escobal 8, Quisumbing 7, Berami 6, Nasiad 4, Ranises 4, Caspe 4, Montecalvo 4, Recto 3, Repollo 1.
