Council delays Xmas break to approve P2B 2004 budget
By Aurea A. Gerundio

WITH the 2004 City budget yet to be approved, the City Council has to extend its session until December 16 before the Council goes on recess for the holiday season.

City Councilor Emmanuel Galicia Sr. said Friday they earlier decided to conduct the last regular session on December 9, but they need ample time to deliberate on the proposed City budget and have it approved before the year ends.

"So we still have our regular sessions until the 16th as we have yet to approve the 2004 budget," Galicia said. He said the completion of all committee hearings depends on the committee and finance. The City Council is set to approve the proposed P2.165 billion City budget for 2004.

Under the local code, Galicia said, the council is required to conduct four regular sessions a month.

Galicia said that if the council will have the last regular session on December 16, which is just the third session for the month, they can always hold a special session to comply the required total number of sessions.

City Council committee on finance chair Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz said the committee hearings with the different departments were done Friday.

Ortiz added that the request of the executive department for the approval of the P60 million worth of cash gifts for government employees will be presented to the Council on Dec 9, while the 2004 budget will be presented to the council on the 16th.
